What is Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity?
Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to build houses with families in need. Since its start in 1991, Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity has built 17 houses, providing decent, affordable housing for 27 adults and 54 children. One additional house is under construction for a young, working mother and her 2 little girls.
What does Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity do and how does it work?
Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. Habitat for Humanity builds houses with local families in need, using volunteer labor as much as possible to keep building costs low. NO interest is charged on the mortgage. Partner families pay closing costs, a monthly mortgage payment and pay real estate taxes. Last year, our homeowners paid over $18,000 in property taxes! They also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor into their home.
How are families selected?
We normally accept application once a year. Our Family Selection committee uses a non-discriminatory process to review applications and chooses families based on need for adequate housing, their willingness to become partners in the program, and their ability to repay the zero-interest mortgage.
Where are Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity houses built and who builds them?
Our first 2 homes were on donated lots in Empire and Englewood; 7 homes were built on John Avenue in Empire on property that is held in a community land trust. We are currently developing an 18-lot parcel on Morrison Avenue. Individuals and groups donate their time and energy to help build the houses, under the direction of licensed contractors. Partner families invest at least 500 hours of "sweat equity" into building.
How big are Habitat houses and how much does it cost to build one?
House have 900-1,200 square feet of finished living area depending on number of bedrooms. They do not have garages or carports. They are affordable to low-income families because there is no profit on the sale of the house and no interest charged on the mortgage. The cost to build is about $55,000 depending on the size of the house. This is going up each year due to escalating costs of construction materials.
How does Coos Bay Area HFH get money to build houses?
Coos Bay Area HFH receives donations from individuals, churches, schools and service clubs, businesses, corporations and grants. Our Re-Store of recycled building materials provides funding. Special events and direct mail are also part of our fund-raising efforts. Money from the mortgages goes back into building new homes.
